SERMON STARTER
When I first became a pastor, I noticed the accusations going on in my mind were against my church members. When I was with them, I was OK, but when I was alone, I would hear this endless litany of, “They’re lying to you. They stayed home because they’re angry with you.” Or, “They’re walking in willful sin, and they’re ignoring your warnings against it!” Or, “They’re ‘out to get you’ and will stab you in the back when they get a chance!” Or, “They’re staying away from the services because they’re heading a conspiracy to destroy you.” Or, “You’re such a terrible preacher! That last sermon was a real bomb.” This repetitious litany of the imagined sins of myself or my church members drove me into intercessory prayer. The vast majority of these inward voices proved to be the false and unfounded accusations of the “Accuser of the Brethren.” The inward stress and pressure pushed me to my knees to cry out before God in prayer. Gradually, it dawned on me that one of the enemy’s "methodia" / schemes was to accuse me of my Christian brothers who indeed did need prayer and were themselves under Satanic attack. I learned as a pastor and overseer, Satan’s accusations were an indirect call to prayer in behalf of the accused. After I discovered this, I refused to be influenced by the devil’s accusations of the brothers. “Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 It's one thing to hear Satan's Whispered Lies in your head. It's another thing when you agree with his disgusting accusations against you or you church members. Never forget,
Especially resist Satan's Whispered Lies.

A. USE SPIRITUAL WEAPONS - 1. 2 Cor. 10:4,5 “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2. With the Will we “Pull Down:” a. Strongholds, ”Towering Fortresses” b. Arguments and Pretensions c. Taking Captive our Thoughts d. Making them Obedient to the Mind of Christ 3. Submit to God - James 4:7-10 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” a. Resist the Devil b. Follow Jesus’ Example in Luke 4, “It is written. . .”
Job 1:6-11 TLB 6 One day as the angels[d] came to present themselves before the Lord, Satan, the Accuser, came with them. 7 “Where have you come from?” the Lord asked Satan. And Satan replied, “From earth, where I’ve been watching everything that’s going on.” 8 Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth—a good man[e] who fears God and will have nothing to do with evil.” 9 “Why shouldn’t he when you pay him so well?” Satan scoffed. 10 “You have always protected him and his home and his property from all harm. You have prospered everything he does—look how rich he is! No wonder he ‘worships’ you! 11 But just take away his wealth, and you’ll see him curse you to your face!”
Job 2:1-6 TLB 2 Now the angels[a] came again to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan was with them. 2 “Where have you come from?” the Lord asked Satan. “From earth, where I’ve been watching everything that’s going on,” Satan replied. 3 “Well, have you noticed my servant Job?” the Lord asked. “He is the finest man in all the earth—a good man who fears God and turns away from all evil. And he has kept his faith in me despite the fact that you persuaded me to let you harm him without any cause.” 4-5 “Skin for skin,” Satan replied. “A man will give anything to save his life. Touch his body with sickness, and he will curse you to your face!” 6 “Do with him as you please,” the Lord replied; “only spare his life.”
John 8:44 “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies..”
11/19/02 THE ACCUSER A friend wrote to me today. . . “. . . the devil evidently started playing with my mind. I thought maybe you didn't like me, or that you were against me or that you didn't want me to succeed in your church, etc., etc. My mind was going squirrelly.”
MY REPLY: You're right about the enemy. The English name “Satan” is transliterated from Greek, "Satanos" is freely translated, "Accuser." We know him by what he does. “Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles (Greek: “METHOD-IA” - Schemes) of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11 One of the devil’s favorite schemes is to accuse us, not before the seat of the Almighty as in Job chapters 1 to 3, but in the seat of our minds. Jesus said prophetically, "I saw Satan fall like lightning. . ." Luke 10:18 From where did he fall? He had already fallen from God's approval and his angelic estate. From where did he fall? I propose, from the Presence of Almighty God and his ability to accuse the brethren before God's Throne. See Job Chapters 1-3. When did this happen in fact? As the Cross of Jesus was lifted and as Jesus cried, "It is finished!" Satan fell from his place of accusation as the Eternal Prosecutor of the Brethren. Now, he presents himself at the court of our consciousness. He waits until we are vulnerable and then releases his fiery darts of accusation. See Eph. 6:17. We counter them as Jesus did with the Sword of the Spirit. "It is written. . ." See Luke 4:4; 4:8; 4:10.
When I first became a pastor, I noticed the accusations going on in my mind were against my church members. When I was with them, I was OK, but when I was alone, I would hear this endless litany of, “They’re lying to you.
